Can leaders be humble and ambitious?

In business, nothing is more counter-intuitive nowadays as humility. It is thought that to succeed as a business person, an employee, or an entrepreneur, one must be driven by pure ambition and compete, whatever means necessary, to win at any cost.

In our talk with Edson Agatti, founder, and CEO of Hayek Global College, we propose that humility comes before ambition and it is a cardinal, foundational virtue for business. Business is by definition «other-directed» it is about people interacting at all levels, and to be able to profit from these interactions and generate true, sustainable value and wealth, these relationships must be grounded in humility.

Humility and ambition are not mutually exclusive…rather, they are complimentary, and together, they build the self-confidence that drives anyone and everyone involved in business to take risks, innovate and find new and better ways to serve others, while at the same time, accomplish their own goals.
